Everything in the Old Testament points us to Jesus, salvation, & redemption. The Passover is a perfect example. God told Pharaoh that Israel was His firstborn nation & because he had mistreated God’s firstborn, He would kill the Egyptians firstborn. Exodus 4:22-23 But the Israelites were saved with by an act of faith. That night, the Israelites sacrificed an unblemished lamb & put its blood on the door frame of their houses. When the angel saw the blood of the lamb, he knew that death had already come to that house & he passed over it, sparing their lives. Every year thereafter, the Israelites dedicated their firstborn sons to the Lord. But they did not sacrifice their innocent lives. Instead, they redeemed them. Exodus 12-13 This was the practice for throughout the Old Testament until God sent His own firstborn, unblemished Son as our sacrifice.
John the Baptist called Jesus the Lamb of God. John 1:29-36 He became our Passover Lamb as Paul told the Corinthians. Just before His death, Jesus celebrated the Passover with His disciples. He told them how He was setting up a new covenant. The Passover meal would no longer just represent the exodus, but also His sacrifice, salvation, & redemption for all people. The bread symbolized His body (His life) & the wine symbolized His blood that would be shed for the remission of our sins. He was telling them how He was like a sheep being led to the slaughter, as their Passover Lamb. But they didn’t understand at the time. After His death, His disciple John said that He kept the pattern of the passover lamb by not having one of His bones broken. So, when we believe in who Jesus is & accept His sacrifice for us, then we are covered in His blood. Just as the lamb’s blood allowed God to pass over the Israelites’ houses & spare their physical lives, Christ’s blood covers us & reveals that someone has already died for us. This enables God to spare our lives eternally!
By the Blood of the Lamb we are redeemed! “You were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.” 1 Peter 1:18-19
